Pancreatic Surgery

The pancreas is a gland with two broad functions. The exocrine function involves the production of juice that when mixed with food in the intestine aids digestion. The endocrine function includes the secretion of insulin and glucagon, both hormones which control the level of glucose in the blood, amongst several other actions. Certain benign conditions of the pancreas are suitable for laparoscopic treatment. Drainage of a pancreatic pseudocyst, removal of a benign cyst in the tail of the pancreas or excision of an insulinoma (a small benign tumor of the pancreas which makes insulin) are all performed laparoscopically, thus avoiding a major abdominal incision.
